520 0 $a自十五世紀以來、一直到1517年馬丁．路德（Martin Luther, 1483-1546）提出宗教改革宣言之前，「宗教音樂」主要是指天主教會的彌撒。1517年之後，基督新教的音樂才逐漸出現，神劇（oratorio）即是其中的一種。「神劇」一詞的原文”oratorio”，是「禱告廳」的意思，神劇就是為了在這樣的場所吟唱聖歌而設計的。雖然被歸類在宗教音樂，然而由於它並非作為禮拜儀式的任一部分，所以，神劇不屬於儀式音樂。
